VISTA Member Position Description – Volunteer Management
Engaging Youth for Community Change Organization Description
The Volunteer & Information Center (VIC), an agency of the River Region United Way, serves a multi-county area in Alabama by mobilizing volunteers and connecting people, information and services to meet local needs and build a strong, caring community. VIC is an affiliate of the national Hands On Network, the 211Alabama Connects system and Alliance of Information and Referral Services.
Goal
The goal of this VISTA position is to increase area public and private high school student volunteer participation to help meet community needs. The VISTA will establish and work with a volunteer student service council to assess needs, determine projects to meet those needs, and recruit volunteers for each project.
Required Qualifications
· One-year service commitment
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Proficient in Word, Excel, Publisher
· Some knowledge of the grant application process
· Strong oral and written communication skills
· Interest in working with teenagers

Job Description
- Develop a collaborative volunteer program and projects for high schools students from public and private high schools, led by a Youth Service Council with representatives from the schools.
- Develop a strategy to introduce the program to area schools and solicit council members and project volunteers.
- Establish a Youth Service Council with representatives from each school.
- Work with the council to assess community needs and develop projects to meet those needs.
- Maintain project records using Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Develop a training manual for the teen volunteer program for future implementation.
- May work in other areas of the office as needed, assisting with other volunteer management and 211 Connects, fundraising activities, etc.
Compensation
AmeriCorps VISTA living allowance (approximately $900/month), health benefits, child care assistance, student loan forbearance or deferment, a $1200 end of service stipend or $4,725 educational award.

This one-year AmeriCorps VISTA position is offered in conjunction with the Volunteer and Information Center’s “Building a Better Future for the River Region VISTA Project.”
